Adding Lookout Cay to Your Travel Bucket List
Our Goofy Getaways Operations Director Greg explored Lookout Cay for a day and is giving you an inside look at all this equal parts serene and exciting new destination has to offer to Disney Cruise Line guests.
Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point is the latest port of call to be added to Disney Cruise Line Bahamian itineraries. Like Disney’s Castaway Cay, this location is a Disney private island, which means only Disney ships are allowed to dock at this beautiful destination on the Bahamian island of Eleuthera.
Beauty and Relaxation Are Key
From the time you arrive on this island, you are immersed in its natural beauty. Disney has developed only a small portion of the location leaving much of the island untouched and undeveloped. For me, without question, the main draw of Lookout Cay is the incredible beach. The beach has soft pale pink sand, and the water is crystal clear for as far as you can see. The beach is divided into two separate sections, the family beach, and the adult beach – Serenity Bay. Although the two beach areas are near each other, there is a clear separation between the two.
One of the things that was most impressive to me was the abundance of beach chairs and bright, colorful umbrellas. Guests should have little difficulty finding beach chairs and umbrellas right next to the water. Private cabanas are available for rent and most hold up to eight guests, so they would be great for families traveling together. Cabanas are located on both the family beach and the adult beach.
How To Get To The Island
This might sound like a silly question as obviously your Disney ship will dock at the island, however, with conservation always apart of Disney imagineering, the island is located about ½ mile from the dock. Guests must take a 15 minute walk along the manmade pier to reach the island. This provides a wonderful opportunity to see the beauty of the island from a distance as you approach the main entrance. Once there, guests take a short 10 minute tram ride to the only tram stop on the island. All features and amenities of the island can easily be accessed from this tram stop via a short walk.
Dining Options
Lookout Cay has three separate restaurants. True True BBQ and True True Too BBQ are both located on the family beach. Serenity Bay BBQ is located on the adult beach. As evident by the restaurant names, BBQ fare is the primary focus. All locations offer the same island buffet feasts including a menu that is filled with Bahamian style dishes. Of course, there are the standard Disney Cruise Line beach BBQ offerings like burgers, ribs, and chicken sandwiches. My favorite part was the incredible number of sides, like grilled corn, yucca fries, and plantain slices. Oh yes, there is also soft serve ice cream.
Family Play Area
My recent visit included adults only, so I did not have an opportunity to check this out in detail, but the island offers amazing family play areas. If families want to have fun away from the beach, they can head to the Play-Play Pavilion. Here, everyone can participate in the family beach party, Disney Fun in the Sun Beach Bash. The party includes Disney characters plus games designed for the whole family. Sebastian’s Cove is the dedicated space for youth activities led by counselors from the kid’s club onboard the ship.
Junkanoo Celebrations
Junkanoo is a traditional Bahamian festival steeped in history, music, dance, and art. Multiple times daily, local Bahamian artists and dancers celebrate RUSH! – A Junkanoo Celebration. This celebration includes dancers in colorful, traditional Bahamian costumes along with many Disney characters. This is a celebration for the whole family and is not to be missed. This celebration starts in the Goombay Cultural Center which is an excellent location for guests to learn much more about Bahamian customs and traditions.
Bars and Shopping
The island does contain many different bars and shopping venues, all centrally located and easily accessible.
Is Lookout Cay Bucket List-Worthy?
Personally, I enjoyed Lookout Cay more than Castaway Cay, primarily because everything can be accessed from one central tram stop. I would strongly recommend that you add this port of call to your next Disney Bahamian cruise.
